Congrats to MLFD's Juniors and Explorers
MLFD Junior/Explorer Firefighter members participated in the 5th Annual Burlington County Explorer-Junior Firefighter Competition on Saturday, May 11, 2013. Our members under the leadership of Captain William McCorkle have been training diligently over the last several months for this event. All 5 scenarios required targeting training on skills needed for responding real world incidents. Scenarios included a Mini Firefighter Combat Challenge (timed donning of gear and then relay obstacle course), Motor Vehicle Accident with Patient Injury (Emphasis scene size-up and patient removal), Know Your Tools (knowing equipment terminology & location on truck), Bucket Brigade (fire service history) and a House Fire (water supply line, hand line team and search & rescue team). Our members competed with our fire service family members from Evesham, Delran, Medford and Riverside.
Thanks to all of our members hard work in preparation for this event; along with Captain McCorkle’s dedication to the Junior/Explorer Program.
MLFD takes delivery of new 4,000 gallon foam tanker
March 14, 2013
In support of the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety and the Burlington County Office of Emergency Management, MLFD received a new 4,000 gallon Foam Tanker which has been purchased through a Homeland Security Grant by Burlington County. The purpose of the Foam Tanker is to support a high volume water and foam delivery system vehicle. This system is especially designed to combat large petrochemical flammable liquid fires and will directly support the national port security initiative. Currently there is a lack of firefighting foam resources in the South Jersey region to provide the appropriate response and recovery from hazardous materials incidents. The grant is valued at $435,000.00.
Department approved for $46,000 Federal Grant
The Mount Laurel Fire Department has received communications from FEMA that their application for FY2012 Assistance to Firefighters Grant has been approved. The grant is a 90/10 match in which FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security provides $41,400 and the department responsible for $4,600. The grant will provide for 20 sets of new turn-out gear.
The Mount Laurel Fire Department is a combination department which utilizes both career and volunteer personnel to carry out the mission of the department; to provide efficient fire protection services and support to Mount Laurel Township EMS. In the last two years, the department has had 31 new volunteer members join the department with 19 of those members joining in 2012. The purpose of the grant is to supplement the 2013 budget in acquiring additional personal protective equipment. A set of new turn-out gear costs roughly $2,300, with national standards recommending a lifespan of 10 years.
